An Experimental Study on Self-Awareness Changes in Cardiac Children Who were Performed Therapeutic Play before and after Surgery

Abstract
Main purpose of this study is identify the differences of the awareness on friend, self, mother, father, nurse, physician by means of the semantic differential scales between the children with the congenital heart disease and those who performed doll play during the pre-and post-operative period.
The criteria for the choice of subjects were the children without mental retardation; age ranged from 6 through 12.
Of these subjects, by random sampling, fourteen cardiac children did not perform doll play and the other fourteen did.
28 cardiac children who were hospitalized Seoul National University Hospital during the period from May 1 to October 5, 1981 were chosen as subjects for this study.
The results of this study reviewed in a statistical analysis of the t-test and F-ratio to obtain the following findings:
1. In the control group.
1) A factor of potency in self of post-operative cardiac children is more positive than that of pre-operative cardiac children. (p<0.01)
2) The awareness level of pre-operative cardiac children showed significant differences between each concept of friend, self, and mother, and between each factor of evaluation, potency and activity
3) The awareness level of post-operative cardiac children showed significant differences between each factor of evaluation, potency and activity. And there were no significant differences between each concept in post-operative group.
2. In the experimental group.
1) Each factor of evaluation (p<0.001) and potency (p<0.001) of self, potency of mother p<0.05) , evaluation of father (p<0.05) in post-operative cardiac children were more positive than those of preoperative cardiac children.
2) The awareness level of pre-operative cardiac children showed significant differences between each concept of friend, self and mother, and between each factor of evaluation, potency and activity.
3) The awareness level of post-operative cardiac children showed significant differences between each concept of friend, self and mother, and between each factor of evaluation, potency and activity.
